I haven’t thought of a full plot for my film yet but i have a few more ideas of scenes that i could include in my trailer maybe. Previously I said I didn’t want any dialogue, however, I think my trailer’s going to start with a few quick shots, get the pace going and then I’ll have a a short scene where a girl is sat on the floor playing with her rag dolls and then she’ll suddenly stop and so will the music and maybe will change the angle of the shot so you can see the face of the rag doll and although we can’t move the face I want to use a voice changer effect so it sounds the rag doll is talking. – the rest of the trailer then will not have any dialogue and will consist of series of shots and ‘title screens’.
I can still use this scene in a structure similar to pan’s labyrinth. I want to start with a few quick shots, then i can use the one where the girl is in the garden playing with her dolls and then it can go to more quick shots and build up towards then end; music will also help this.
Since writing the above, I have done some filming – and tried to film my idea which is vaguely explained. I didn’t really get any ideas for the rest of the plot to help me with my trailer, however after thinking more about it I realised I don’t need to know the plot of the film – most films haven’t even been made when the teaser trailer is first released – and as it doesn’t give away the story line it shouldn’t matter if there is one – so i’m going to create some storyboards with ideas for shots that would probably occur in the film and then see what happens.
I began experimenting on premiere with my footage so far, however after roughly editing the clips it became a longer scene rather than a part of a trailer so i thought i might be able to use them else where as a slower pace of shots after a time of quicker edits. After the first ‘title screen’ i could use my first bit of footage where the girl is the garden playing with her dolls by the apple tree – there would be two shots of her playing happily by the tree and then a second title screen – another shot after that which is the girl looking shocked at the doll and we don’t know why yet then a third title screen before a closeup shot of the dolls face – and this is where i would use the voice changing effect so it sounds like the doll is talking to her – this would also show that it is a fantasy genre.
This is really encouraging work.
Try to link your own ideas to more of the technical features that you have identified in the existing trailers.
